Jo Staff

Custom Jo by Seaholme kobudo, in Ash or Oak.

Available in lengths from 150 cm to 110 cm

Thicknesses – 30mm for a stronger bo suitable for light contact, or a 26mm which has a lower mass and so moves quicker, but will probably break if used against another weapon.

Species – Oak is the traditional material for kobudo equipment and gives a good balance of strength and durability.  Ash is a little lighter and has a touch more “spring” to it, while still very strong, making it an ideal material for staff.

Sizing

The recommended length for a jo staff is to the user’s armpit.

Specification

Jo are produced to length, and the ends are rounded over to remove sharp points.  They are then sanded to a smooth surface and given a coat of tung oil, which creates a protective matte surface, which will not become “sticky” during training as hands get sweaty, and is particularly important for techniques such as ‘nuki’ where the bo must move through the hands.
